The Origin Family:

Origin 8 includes a suite of features that cater to the needs of scientists and engineers alike. Multi-sheet workbooks, publication-quality graphics, and standardized analysis tools provide a tightly integrated workspace for you to import data, create and annotate graphs, explore and analyze data, and publish your work.

To ensure that Origin meets your data analysis requirements, intuitive tools for advanced statistics, regression, nonlinear curve fitting, signal processing, image processing and peak analysis are built-in. Since any analysis operation can be set to automatically recalculate, you can reuse your projects as templates for future work, thereby simplifying your daily routine.

New Multi-sheet Workbooks

  • Organize and manage data, analysis reports, graphs, images, and notes using an intuitive and flexible multi-sheet workbook.
  • Format your worksheet as desired, using rich text cell formatting and reserved rows for long name, units, user-defined parameters, comments, sampling rate, and other metadata.
  • Organize your graphs, images, and notes by placing them in worksheet cells.
  • Discover trends in your data by viewing small graphs within column headers, called Sparklines1.
  • View metadata associated with imported files in the workbook organizer. Enter additional metadata as desired.

Multi-sheet Workbook

Origin’s new workbook offers multiple worksheets with rich-text cell formatting. The Workbook Organizer provides an integrated tree-based interface to view data properties.

Analysis Templates™

Origin 8 can automatically update any analysis operation whenever your source data or analysis parameters are changed.

This powerful feature can be used to create Analysis Templates that are pre-confi gured to perform analysis and update results. Analysis Templates may consist of either a single Origin workbook or an entire Origin project.

Using your Analysis Templates is easy...

  • Easily access your Analysis Templates by using the Recent Books or recent projects list
  • Import new data (e.g. drag and drop data from Windows Explorer) or use the new re-import feature to update an already loaded data file
  • Origin recalculates your analysis results automatically, then you can review and export (to Adobe® PDF) or print the results

Setting up your Analysis Template...

Set up your analysis the way you want. After your initial analysis has completed, just clear you raw data and save the window to make an Analysis Template.

Analysis Template Setup

Analysis Templates

You can drag and drop files to import them into your Analysis Template, thereby triggering the analysis, or, if you’re using the same data file each time, you can use the “re-import” feature. Re-import lets you bring in the same data file that was imported into the Analysis Template before so that the analysis automatically recalculates on the updated data.

More Powerful Data Access Methods

  • SQL Query: Either type SQL code or create graphically, then save named query
  • Updated ASCII Import wizard with improved variable extraction
    and multiple delimiter support
  • Create custom import routines using X-Functions
  • Enhanced metadata support

New Import Formats

  • Molecular Devices® pCLAMP (ABF 2.0, ABF 1.8, DAT)
  • National Instruments® DIAdem (DAT, TDM)
  • ETAS INCA (MDF, DAT)
  • imc Mess-Systeme GmbH - FAMOS
  • (DAT, RAW)
  • JCAMP-DX (DX, DX1, JDX, JCM)
    NetCDF (NC)

Enhanced Worksheet Data Extraction

Now it is even easier to locate and extract subsets of your data in Origin’s worksheets. Themes can now be used to save settings for a variety of tasks such as importing data, formatting a worksheet, tailoring a graph to meet the requirements of a specific journal, performing data analysis, or exporting your graph. You can also test the condition statement and preview the highlighted results in source data worksheet. Extraction results can be restricted to your choice of columns.

Expanded Themes

Save time with Themes. Themes can now be used to save settings for a variety of tasks such as importing data, formatting a worksheet, tailoring a graph to meet the requirements of a specific journal, or exporting your graph. Accessing your saved themes is as simple as picking the name from a drop-down list in that operation’s dialog box.

New Graph Types and Features

  • Contour plot directly from XYZ data using triangulation
  • Contour plot boundary support (top left)
  • Polar Contour plot (top right)
  • Scatter Matrix plot (bottom left)
  • Stacked Lines by Y Offset plot (bottom right)

Query Builder Dialog

A new interface provides a way to graphically construct SQL queries. Queries can be saved with the worksheet, so that any changes in the database are automatically reflected. Queries can be copied from one sheet to another. Query information is displayed in the Workbook Organizer.

Extract Worksheet Data dialog

The Extract Worksheet Data dialog makes it easy to assign aliases to columns, test conditional statements, and control the data extraction.

Analysis Themes

All analysis dialogs provide an easy means to save the settings as a theme. Simply click the save button, specify a name, and all your analysis settings will be saved to a new theme.
