Baseline Tool

Origin's Baseline tool is comprised of three tabs: the Baseline, the Peaks tab, and the Area tab. The tool is optimally used by first finding the baseline using the Baseline tab, and then finding both positive and negative peaks in the data plot using the Peaks tab. Finally, areas under the peaks or entire data plot can be obtained using the Area tab. By tab:

The Baseline Tab

The Baseline tab allows the user to define a baseline, with a certain number of points, to be used during peak detection. Options include automatic baseline detection, creating a baseline based on a user-defined equation, or utilizing a pre-existing baseline dataset.

In addition, the Baseline tab provides controls for subtracting the baseline, undoing the subtraction of the baseline (if the result is unsatisfactory), and modifying the baseline (if the baseline looks good, but certain points along it require a slight adjustment).

The Peaks Tab

The Peaks tab provides an interface for locating each peak (positive or negative) in your peak data. The number of peaks the tool will locate depends on a search rectangle which is defined by three percentage settings: Minimum Peak Width, Maximum Peak Width, and Minimum Peak Height.

Labels can be attached to each peak. Symbols known as "base markers" can be added to the plot, indicating the beginning and ending of the base of each peak. Finally, peak center markers can be included in the graph to indicate where the peak height and center occurs. These marks are utilized on the Area tab when calculating the Area (and other results) underneath each peak.

The Area Tab

The Area tab provides options for calculating the area underneath a curve. The resultant dataset created during the area calculation can be plotted in the existing graph, a new graph, or no graph. In addition, the area calculation can be performed with respect to:

  • Each peak by enabling the Use Base Markers check box
  • The baseline (as created on the Baseline tab) by clicking the Use Baseline button
  • Y=0 by clicking the 'From Y = 0' button

Once the calculation has completed, results are reported to the Results Log. View a sample...
